Rounding to Decimal Places

Decimal places (d.p.) count digits after the decimal point. To round to n decimal places:

  • Find the nth digit after the decimal
  • Look at the next digit (the “decider”)
  • If the decider is 0–4, leave the nth digit; if 5–9 (half up), add 1
3.14159 → 2 d.p. = 3.14 · 3 d.p. = 3.142

Money is usually 2 decimal places. Engineering drawings may specify more; follow the assignment or standard you were given.

What Round Half Up Means

“Round half up” (also called round half away from zero for positives) is the rule most people learn in school: a digit of exactly 5 rounds upward.

2.5 → 3 · 1.25 (1 d.p.) → 1.3 · −1.5 → −2

Other conventions exist — banker’s rounding (half to even), round half down, truncate — but exams and many business systems still expect half up unless they say otherwise.

Rounding to Significant Figures

Significant figures (sig figs) measure precision from the first non-zero digit, which matters more than fixed decimals for scientific measurements.

  • 405.2 to 3 sig figs → 405
  • 0.004562 to 3 sig figs → 0.00456
  • 12,450 to 3 sig figs → often 1.25 × 10⁴ (scientific notation avoids ambiguous trailing zeros)
