Compound Interest Formula
APY = (1 + r/n)^n − 1
P = starting principal · r = annual nominal rate (as a decimal) · n = compounds per year · t = years · A = ending amount.
Example without contributions
$10,000 at 7% for 10 years, compounded monthly (n = 12): A = 10000 × (1 + 0.07/12)^(120) ≈ $20,096. Interest earned ≈ $10,096 — roughly doubling over a decade at that rate.
APR vs APY
APR (or nominal rate) is the headline yearly rate before compounding frequency. APY folds compounding into an effective yearly yield so you can compare products fairly. At 7% nominal compounded monthly, APY is a bit above 7%.

Why Compounding Frequency Matters
Annual, quarterly, monthly, and daily compounding all use the same nominal rate but different n. More frequent compounding slightly increases ending value. The jump from annual to monthly is noticeable; from monthly to daily is smaller. The calculator lets you switch frequencies to see the gap.
