What Is a Tip Out Calculator?

A tip out calculator (also called a tip pool calculator or restaurant tip split calculator) turns end-of-shift tip totals into clean dollar amounts for each person. Instead of arguing over napkin math, you enter the pot, pick your house method, and see who gets what.

This free tool covers the three most common policies: percentage tip-outs from a server's tips, a shared pool split by hours worked, and a points × hours pool for role-weighted fairness.

How to Use This Restaurant Tip Split Calculator

  1. Enter total tips for the shift (cash + card tips together, or one server's tips for tip-out mode).
  2. Pick tip out %, pool by hours, or points × hours to match house policy.
  3. Add roles or people with percentages, hours, and optional point weights.
  4. Read the payout table — amount and share % for every line — then pay out or record for payroll notes.

Tip Out vs Tip Pool Formulas

Tip-out $ = Tips × Role %
Hours share = (Hours ÷ Total hours) × Pool
Points share = (Points × Hours ÷ Σ units) × Pool

Some restaurants tip out on sales (e.g. 5% of liquor sales) instead of tips. If your policy uses sales, enter that dollar tip-out amount as a % of whatever base you put in the top field — or convert sales × % offline and list fixed roles so the kept amount is correct for the shift.

Worked Example: How to Calculate Tip Out

A server clocks $420 in tips. House tip-out: 10% bar, 5% busser, 2% host (17% total).

  • Bartender: $420 × 10% = $42.00
  • Busser: $420 × 5% = $21.00
  • Host: $420 × 2% = $8.40
  • Server keeps: $420 − $71.40 = $348.60

Same pot as an hours pool with two servers (8h + 6h) and one busser (8h): total 22 hours → 8/22, 6/22, and 8/22 of $420 respectively.

Tip out: server keeps most tips and pays support by %. Tip pool: tips are combined and redistributed by hours, points, or policy. Both modes are available above.

How do you calculate tip out by percentage?
