Hourly ↔ Salary Formulas
Annual wage is hourly rate times hours worked in a year. Reverse the product to get hourly from salary:
Hourly = Annual ÷ (Hours/week × Weeks/year)
Monthly = Annual ÷ 12 · Weekly = Annual ÷ Weeks/year
Worked example: $25/hr · 40 × 52
Hours/year = 2,080. Annual = 25 × 2,080 = $52,000. Weekly = $1,000; biweekly = $2,000; monthly ≈ $4,333.33 (annual ÷ 12). Flip the mode and divide $52,000 by 2,080 to recover $25/hr.
How Many Hours in a Work Year?
- Full-time default: 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours — the most common benchmark for hourly ↔ annual comparisons.
- Paid time off: if you want “working weeks only,” lower weeks/year (e.g. 50). Salaried roles often still quote annual on a 52-week basis.
- Part-time: set hours/week to 20, 25, or whatever you work — annual wage scales linearly.

Weekly, Biweekly & Monthly
Employers pay on different cadences. The calculator derives weekly as annual ÷ weeks/year (or hourly × hours/week), biweekly as weekly × 2, and monthly as annual ÷ 12. Semi-monthly (24 pays) is close to but not identical to biweekly (26 pays) — check your offer letter if precision matters for budgeting.
Overtime Note
This converter uses straight-time rates only. Overtime (1.5×, double-time, shift differentials, bonuses, tips) is not modeled. For tip-heavy roles, estimate base pay here and tip income separately with a tip calculator. Percent raises and cuts are easy with a percentage calculator.
