What Is a Cubic Feet Calculator?

Cubic feet (ft³) measure three-dimensional volume — the space inside a box, room, tank, or pile of material. This free cubic feet calculator multiplies your length, width, and height, converts any input unit to feet automatically, and shows equivalent volumes in yards, gallons, liters, and cubic meters.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Select your measurement unit (feet, inches, yards, meters, or centimeters).
  2. Enter length, width, and height for your space or object.
  3. Read the volume in cubic feet shown in the results panel.
  4. Check converted values in cubic yards, gallons, liters, and m³ below.

Cubic Feet Formula

Volume (ft³) = Length × Width × Height

All three dimensions must be in feet before multiplying. Convert first: inches ÷ 12, yards × 3, meters × 3.28084, centimeters ÷ 30.48.

  • L = length in feet
  • W = width in feet
  • H = height in feet

Worked Example

A storage unit measures 10 ft long × 8 ft wide × 6 ft high. Volume = 10 × 8 × 6 = 480 ft³. That equals 480 ÷ 27 ≈ 17.78 yd³, or 480 × 7.48052 ≈ 3,591 gallons.

Common Use Cases

  • Estimating moving truck or storage unit capacity
  • Calculating soil, mulch, or concrete volume for projects
  • Sizing HVAC systems or room air volume

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How do you calculate cubic feet?

Multiply length × width × height after converting all measurements to feet. The result is volume in cubic feet (ft³).

How many gallons are in a cubic foot?

One cubic foot holds about 7.48052 US gallons. Multiply cubic feet by that factor to convert.

How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?

There are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard. Divide cubic feet by 27 to get cubic yards.

How do you convert inches to cubic feet?

Convert each dimension from inches to feet by dividing by 12, then multiply. Example: 24 in × 12 in × 6 in = 2 ft × 1 ft × 0.5 ft = 1 ft³.

What is the cubic feet formula?

Volume (ft³) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Height (ft). All three dimensions must use the same unit before multiplying.

How do you convert cubic feet to liters?

Multiply cubic feet by 28.3168466 to get liters. One cubic foot equals about 28.32 liters.

How many cubic feet fit in a standard moving box?

A typical medium moving box (18 × 18 × 16 inches) holds about 3 ft³. A large box (24 × 18 × 18 inches) holds roughly 4.5 ft³.
