Browse allWhat Is a Semester Grade Calculator?
Many classes weight homework, quizzes, midterms, and finals differently. This free semester grade calculator combines those category percentages into one final score and maps it to a standard US letter grade — with a warning if your weights do not add to 100%.
How to Use This Calculator
- Name each category to match your syllabus (Homework, Quizzes, Final, etc.).
- Enter the weight % and your current grade % for each category.
- Add or remove rows as needed — click Add Category for extra sections.
- Read your final grade as a percentage and letter (A–F) instantly.
Weighted Grade Formula
Each category contributes proportionally to its weight. A high grade in a low-weight category matters less than a lower grade in a heavily weighted final.
Worked Example
Homework 92% at 20% weight, Quizzes 85% at 15%, Midterm 78% at 25%, Final 88% at 40%: (92×20 + 85×15 + 78×25 + 88×40) / 100 = 85.65% → letter grade B.
Common Use Cases
- Tracking semester standing mid-term
- Calculating what final exam score you need for a target grade
- Verifying grades against your school's online portal
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How do you calculate a weighted semester grade?
Multiply each category grade by its weight, sum the products, then divide by the sum of weights: Σ(grade × weight) / Σ(weights).
What if my category weights do not add up to 100%?
The calculator still computes a weighted average and warns you when weights ≠ 100%. Match your syllabus for the most accurate result.
What letter grade scale does this tool use?
A ≥ 90%, B ≥ 80%, C ≥ 70%, D ≥ 60%, F below 60%. Confirm cutoffs with your school — some use plus/minus scales.
Can I add more than four grade categories?
Yes. Click Add Category to create as many rows as your syllabus requires.
How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?
Enter your current grades and weights, then adjust the final exam grade until your overall percentage matches your target.
What is a weighted average grade?
A weighted average gives each category different importance. A 95% quiz worth 10% affects your final less than an 80% final worth 40%.
Does this work for high school and college?
Yes. Any course with percentage-based weighted categories can use this calculator — match names and weights to your syllabus.
Is my grade data stored anywhere?
No. All calculations happen in your browser. Your grades are never uploaded or saved on any server.
