What Does This Converter Do?

This tool converts weight in grams to volume in tablespoons and teaspoons for a specific ingredient. Flour, sugar, butter, and salt each weigh differently per spoon — you cannot divide by 15 and get an accurate result.

Select your ingredient and enter grams (or flip to spoons → grams). Results use published density values for 35+ common baking and cooking ingredients.

How to Use This Converter

  1. Enter grams (or number of spoons if using reverse mode).
  2. Select your ingredient from the categorized dropdown.
  3. Read tablespoons and teaspoons — both update instantly.
  4. Toggle reverse to convert spoons back to grams.
  5. Use the quick reference table for common gram amounts at a glance.

Conversion Formula

Tablespoons = Grams ÷ Grams per Tablespoon

Teaspoons = Grams ÷ Grams per Teaspoon

Grams per tablespoon (g/tbsp) is the weight of one level tablespoon for that ingredient. All-Purpose Flour = 7.81 g/tbsp; Granulated Sugar = 12.5 g/tbsp; Butter = 14.2 g/tbsp. Values are for level (flat) US tablespoons.

Worked Example

A recipe calls for 100 g of all-purpose flour. Flour weighs 7.81 g per tablespoon and 2.6 g per teaspoon.

Tablespoons = 100 ÷ 7.81 = 12.80 tbsp

Teaspoons = 100 ÷ 2.6 = 38.46 tsp

Check: 12.80 tbsp × 7.81 g = 99.97 g ✓

The same 100 g of granulated sugar (12.5 g/tbsp) would be only 8.00 tbsp — showing why ingredient selection matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert grams to tablespoons?

Divide grams by the grams-per-tablespoon value for your ingredient. Example: 50 g flour ÷ 7.81 g/tbsp = 6.4 tbsp. Always use the correct ingredient — flour and sugar differ significantly.

Why can't I just divide grams by 15?

15 g per tablespoon only works for water. Flour (~7.8 g/tbsp), cocoa (~5.4 g/tbsp), and brown sugar (~13.8 g/tbsp) all differ. Using 15 g for everything can throw off baking ratios by 50% or more.

Are these level or heaped tablespoons?

All values are for level (flat, scraped) tablespoons and teaspoons — the standard in published recipes and culinary references.

How do I convert tablespoons back to grams?

Click the reverse toggle, enter the number of spoons, and multiply by grams-per-spoon. Example: 3 tbsp butter × 14.2 g/tbsp = 42.6 g.

Does a US tablespoon equal a UK tablespoon?

This tool uses the US tablespoon (15 ml volume reference). UK tablespoons are slightly larger. For precision baking, weigh in grams instead of converting between systems.

How many grams in a teaspoon of salt?

Table salt = 6 g/tsp; kosher salt = 5 g/tsp. Salt is denser than flour, so a teaspoon of salt weighs more than a teaspoon of flour — always pick the right ingredient.

Is a kitchen scale more accurate than spoon conversion?

Yes. A scale measures weight directly with no density guesswork. Use this converter when a recipe lists spoons and you only have a scale, or vice versa.

Why does packed brown sugar weigh more than granulated?

Packed brown sugar has less air between crystals — 13.8 g/tbsp vs 12.5 g/tbsp for granulated. Packing method affects volume, which is why weight-based baking is more reliable.
